Y6 children have developed a set of rules that everyone should use when they are online in order to stay safe. During a recent visit to the Central Manchester CLC at Trinity High School, the children were filmed presenting their rules using green screen technology and this is the resulting video. They were particularly pleased to have this opportunity to experience life as TV presenters – I’m sure you will agree that we have several stars of the future on our school!

This short film enjoyed its premiere this evening at our Esafety Meeting for Parents and Carers and we would now like to share this with the world. We hope you enjoy our video and find it informative.

Please leave us a comment to let us know what you think of it. Thank you for watching!

Following on from the work that staff started on developing a set of rules for e-safety that can be shared with everyone in the St James’ community (staff, children, families and friends,) Y6 has been working very hard on coming up with some easy to remember rules that use mostly positive rather than negative language. We had a lot of discussion about which were in their opinion, the most important messages and what order they should go in.

These rules are not a definitive list but are a good starting point for your to talk to your children about the importance of e-safety. You can see examples of these rules around school, in the ICT suite and here on this site under the Y6 posters post.

To what extent would staff prefer to have a more open but monitored web connection compared to a locked down filtered web?

The purpose of the meeting is to review the new e safety blog and the resources contained therein. There is also a new e-safety scheme of work on the Teacher’s page of this blog (see menu on right). Please review this scheme of work and identify areas where you may need training or resources to deliver it. At the end of the session we would also like to have a list of simple child friendly rules concerning the use of ICT to be displayed in every classroom, discussed with the children and sent home to parents.

Look at the resources on the e-safety blog in keystages;

Read the scheme of work for e-safety for your phase highlighting any training issues or other queries you might have. Make notes and return to HM;

Work on a simple set of rules for the use of ICT within school suitable for your keystage;

Convene in Y6 at 1620 for feedback.

Here is a set of rules written by Year 6 pupils at Lidget Green Primary School, in Bradford which we could use as a starting point:

1. Log out after you have finished
2. Don’t give out personal information
3. Don’t go on a website without checking with an adult
4. Make sure you know who you are talking to
5. Don’t talk to people you don’t know
6. Don’t download anything without checking with an adult
7. Respect copyright
8. Don’t use abusive language or rude words. Be polite, be respectful
9. Use Safesearch or a children’s search engine
10. If you want to upload pictures check with an adult first
11. Report abuse and unsuitable sites
12. Don’t tell anyone your password
13. Don’t use anyone else’s account
14. Don’t sign up for anything without checking first.
15. Don’t open any files you have been sent without checking with an adult first.

Is 15 too many? Are they simple and clear enough for the younger children? should we have a separate set of rules for younger children? Too negative?Please leave a comment below with any discussion points, ideas or suggestions you would like to raise.
