It is frightening that it isn't just how children use text on the internet and computers now but that web cams are also used. A child can be msning a friend and able to watch what they are doing and vice versa - what could be seen by mistake in the background? - anything!!!

Oh, and I also like the analogy with crossing the road. It fits with the research that says that the majority of road deaths of minors come between the age of 11 and 14 - ie precisely the age that they are first allowed out without anyone holding their hands or reminding them about road safety.

From my point of view, the main implication is the need for every person in the school to take responsibility for their own e-safety and that of others. This needs to be embedded across the curriculum each time we use the internet in our classrooms or request work to be undertaken at home. This will make the transition to a more open system possible.

Are they a little negative?
I don't want the children to see the internet as a scary place and i think this list of negatives may scare the children!
Could we add some good aspects of the internet too?
EG. Have fun!

I agree, if we are teaching responsible behaviours the notion that children need to check everything will not reflect the reality of their life outside school. What we are trying to engender is children making responsible choices.

It would be useful to have 5 simple rules - which are short and positive eg
Check with an adult before downloading.

These should be prioritised and some amalgamated. Our suggestion is that the first commandment should be "DON'T give out any personal information including your password to anyone."

A few "make sures" rather than "don'ts" and reduce total number to 7 or 8. Perhaps there should be a separate set to go home and to use in school.
