Ofsted have just published a report on e-safety. It’s definitely worth reading the executive summary at least:
What are the implications for St James’?
- What Inset might be needed to improve e-safety?
- To what extent would staff prefer to have a more open but monitored web connection compared to a locked down filtered web?

From my point of view, the main implication is the need for every person in the school to take responsibility for their own e-safety and that of others. This needs to be embedded across the curriculum each time we use the internet in our classrooms or request work to be undertaken at home. This will make the transition to a more open system possible.
Oh, and I also like the analogy with crossing the road. It fits with the research that says that the majority of road deaths of minors come between the age of 11 and 14 – ie precisely the age that they are first allowed out without anyone holding their hands or reminding them about road safety.
It is frightening that it isn’t just how children use text on the internet and computers now but that web cams are also used. A child can be msning a friend and able to watch what they are doing and vice versa – what could be seen by mistake in the background? – anything!!!
